St Mary’s Episcopal Cathedral

Posted by Jackie on August 4, 2008

Yesterday I attended St Mary’s Cathedral, to hear the Bishop of New Hampshire, Gene Robinson. He is the bishop around whom a lot of the controversy in the Anglican Church is coalescing at the moment, as the first openly gay-and-partnered consecrated bishop. There were a few protesters outside the church before the service (I didn’t take their picture as I’ve got no intention of giving their message of rejection any publicity on this blog), but inside it was packed and a very joyful occasion.

I had been hoping to take a picture of the bishop himself, but it felt a bit crass to take a picture in the middle of the service, and I couldn’t hang around afterwards as I had to catch a plane down south. So instead here is a picture of the Cathedral – unfortunately due to the other buildings around it’s quite difficult to fit it all in, but this will give you a bit of an idea. Check out my 29th December 2007 photo for a view from over the road. If you look carefully, you can see Lansdowne Parish Church in the background.

The Cathedral’s website is here.

  1. I read your post for the day and liked it too. I wonder why the cathedral was in black and white and not in color?

Hi Abraham, thanks. I just thought I’d try it in b&w for a change, and because I thought it might highlight the clouds a bit better – no other reason.

Oh beautiful shot! Sorry I haven’t been around much, everything got pretty chaotic with me but I’m nearly fully back in action.

  4. I like the B&white choice, latelly i’m doing the same.

Nice black and white photo. I bet it was a good service. Glad you didn’t focus on the protesters.

    What a beautiful b&w photo!!!

Thak you for your nice comment on my travel blog.
As to the military junta in Burma/Myanmar, nothing good can be expected… just remember that, for more than 20 days, they didn´t allow international help to enter the country after the imense catastrophe caused by cyclone Nargis a few monthes ago!…

    Greetings

Beautiful b&w. You really know which subjects best suit this genre, and yes it really brings out those dramatic clouds. As for the religious/moral/human rights drama and issue that will no be resolved anytime soon.

Great photo. Tho we didn’t exchange names, Jackie, I believe we met as you arrived and as you left for your plane south – it was good you could join us for one of the most remarkable services St Mary’s has been honoured to host over the last 30 years.
