Bridge and sun

Posted by Jackie on November 24, 2009

A final picture for now of the old bridge, which I gather from one of the comments on a previous post is still used to carry freight (though I wasn’t aware of this – you can see how overgrown the bridge has got so I was surprised that anything is still able to move along the tracks!). This picture was taken mid-morning – I just happened to get the right angle at the right time.

Calm reflection

Posted by Jackie on November 23, 2009

IMGP5277

This is the previous bridge, reflected in an unfeasibly calm river Clyde. I don’t think I’d ever seen it so calm.

Ironwork

Posted by Jackie on November 20, 2009

IMGP5275

This old and now defunct bridge is over the River Clyde as it heads towards the east end of the city. I loved the old ironwork, they don’t make them like they used to.

Bananas in Pyjamas

Posted by Jackie on November 19, 2009

OK, hands up who will have that song in their head all day now? Sorry about that ;)

This banana plant is in the glasshouse in Queen’s Park. You can’t really tell from this, but those leaves were absolutely enormous.

University sky

Posted by Jackie on November 15, 2009

IMGP4839

Another old photo – it’s been 2 weeks since I left the university and started my job in a less aesthetically beautiful part of the city, and it feels like forever ago. So I am posting this as much for nostalgic purposes as anything else. (I’m worried I’ve shown this photo before, but if I did it was ages ago). The sky hasn’t been this colour for a while!

Stained glass frog?

Posted by Jackie on November 14, 2009

IMGP4772

This isn’t actually stained glass, it’s just a representation of some stained glass at the Burrell Collection. Every time I look at the top piece the thing on the right looks like a giant frog to me. I’m sure it’s really something much more sensible.

Burrell light

Posted by Jackie on November 13, 2009

I haven’t shown a picture from the Burrell Collection for a while. One thing I really like about the building is the way they use natural light there.

Spooky

Posted by Jackie on November 12, 2009

IMGP4208

I took this a couple of years ago at the Necropolis at night – I’m not sure if it’s always lit up like this, as we went there as part of Glasgow’s festival of light (which is every two years, so I wonder if it’s happening again soon?). I should have posted this picture at Halloween.

Merchant City piazza

Posted by Jackie on November 11, 2009

IMGP4116

This is an ancient photo from my archives, and is of a piazza next to the Italian Centre in the Merchant City part of town. I think it was a bit cold for any authentic outdoor cafe culture the day I took this!

Subway map

Posted by Jackie on November 9, 2009

SANY0122

London’s tube (underground trains) map has been iconic for decades, and is truly a work of art. Glasgow’s subway map is not quite as complicated – basically if you get on a train and stay on it long enough you’ll end up getting where you want without having to change, as it’s just a circle. This map is outside Hillhead Station on Byres Road.
