A photo a day from Scotland’s biggest city.

Glasgow 2014

Posted by Jackie on November 9, 2007

Later today (12.30pm GMT, I believe) we’ll hear if Glasgow has been successful in its bid to host the Commonwealth Games in 2014. It was originally a three-horse race, but Halifax (Nova Scotia, not Yorkshire) pulled out earlier this year so it’s a straight race between Glasgow and Abuja. Until recently Glasgow were hot favourites, but the news reports over the last week or so have been quite jittery – talking about how because the games have never been in Africa before that may count against Glasgow and for Abuja.

Pretty much ever since I’ve been in Glasgow (two years now) the Glasgow 2014 logo has been very prominent throughout the city – hanging from railings like this one, off lamp-posts, and in windows of businesses who are sponsoring the bid. It certainly seems to have caught the imagination of the city, and it is seen as a great opportunity to regenerate the East End, where the main action would take place.

I’m away so won’t be able to reply to comments for a few days. Photos should still appear each day thanks to the magic of modern technology.

I’m going to have to tune in to the BBC to find out if the games will come to Glasgow!
