Short intermission

Posted by Jackie on August 24, 2009

Just to let you know that I’ll be taking a break from this blog and my other daily photo blog (Sibiu) till the start of September. My laptop had a bit of a meltdown at the weekend, I have masses of work to do and the blogs are just one thing too many to be dealing with! See you next week, when life is hopefully a bit less complicated!

This odd creature is on the wall of the Argos store near the St Enoch shopping centre. I think it has an unusual combination of parents 😀

University and Kelvingrove

IMGP1219

I’m really low on photos at the moment, and as we’re currently on the wrong side of the north-west weather divide (it was 30 degrees C in London a couple of days ago, whereas our sunshine has been of the liquid variety) I don’t really want to take the camera out in the pouring rain, so I’ve dug out a few really ancient photos (well, a couple of years old anyway). This is the tower of the Glasgow University main building in the background, with the Kelvingrove Museum in the foreground.

Oran Mor with bin

Here’s another picture of Oran Mor from the Botanic Gardens. I tried to move around to avoid the red rubbish bin, but actually I think it adds a bit to the picture 🙂

Dome

This is the dome above the balconies in the Gallery of Modern Art, and it is my favourite bit of the whole gallery. I think this is the best picture I’ve ever taken of it.

Here’s a section of another painting I really liked in the Gallery of Modern Art.

Random art (1)

A couple of weekends ago I went to the Gallery of Modern Art with some friends. I took a couple of pictures of some of the big pictures in the ground floor gallery, which I’ll show today and tomorrow. Unfortunately I was very stupid and forgot to make a note of the artists. So I have no idea who they are by, but I like them anyway so here you are 🙂 (If any of the locals do know and want to let me know who the artist is in the comments that would be great!)

Coming in to land

This was taken a couple of weeks ago as I was flying into Glasgow airport – the airport is to the west of the city so this is looking east and the south side is to the right of the picture. Just before this we’d flown over the north of the city and had good views of the university, SECC, Science Centre etc, but annoyingly for me the wing kept getting in the way so my photos weren’t very good. So here’s just a general one, looking not that pretty especially under the grey clouds, but I like the view anyway as I know I’m getting near home 🙂

Quincentenery Memorial Gate

Posted by Jackie on August 16, 2009

SANY0014

I’m really embarrassed to say that, despite coming to the end of my 4th year at Glasgow University, I only noticed this fairly recently! I actually go past it most days as this is where I get off the bus, but had just walked past and never paid attention. As you can see, this gate, which is one of the entrances to Glasgow University’s main building, isn’t just a fancy pattern, but features names of the great and the good who are associated with the University in some way (an interesting factoid: as yet only one woman appears on the gate, Isabel Elder (1828-93) who was a Glasgow philanthropist, university benefactor and champion of higher education for women. So I owe her – I’ll have to go back and find her name amongst the Adam Smiths and James Watts. Hey, maybe my PhD will wow the world so much I’ll end up with my own name there in the future! 😀 )
