A photo a day from Scotland’s biggest city.

Here’s my steeple …

Posted by Jackie on August 9, 2009

Although you’d be forgiven for thinking this is a picture of a church, you’d actually be wrong (though to be fair, it did used to be a church). On the corner of Byres Road and Great Western Road, this is the steeple of Oran Mor, which is now a theatre/concert venue/bar/eaterie.

I found it shocking the first time I saw a photo of a church converted into a café. But in the end, I decided that it was much better than having the beautiful, old building demolished.

Fascinating windows in the steeple. Are they all different from each other?

What a lovely steeple it is!!! The brickwork is amazing. They don’t build ’em like that anymore! It sounds like they really made good use of the church after it wasn’t a church…like Hilda, it seems somewhat sacrilegious at first, but, better to be used than left to just fall apart!

I like it when old churches get a second lease of life. They are always wonderfully designed inside and now this one probably gets more visitors!

    I guess it’s better than being deserted…

    Beautiful tower! Great angle!

  6. It is a great looking building from the outside – I’ve never been inside it.

  7. To be honest, it looks like a church

Deepak, it used to be a church, but gradually (like so many Scottish churches) the congregation dwindled away and was no longer viable.
