Orange and pink

I just liked the patterns and colours of the leaves here. This is from a tree near the bottom of University Avenue, near the Byres Rd junction.

Autumn hometime

Posted by Jackie on October 20, 2009

I’m going to show a few photos from last week featuring Glasgow’s autumn colours, before they all disappear and fall off the trees! This is taken from the top deck of the bus on my way home. The building on the left is the O2 Academy (formerly the Carling Academy), one of Glasgow’s main concert venues. The queue starting to build outside was because local(ish – he’s from Paisley) hero Paolo Nutini was playing that evening.

The traffic on this stretch of road can be quite slow-going during rush hour. It’s got worse as they are building the M74 extension which will cross over the road a bit further down, so there are cones and roadworks and allsorts going on. I’ll be glad when it’s finished!

Happy Diwali!

Posted by Jackie on October 19, 2009

Apologies for the late posting – I had a senior moment 🙂

Saturday just gone was the Hindu festival of Diwali – here is a greeting I found chalked onto the ground.

Victoria Infirmary sculpture

Posted by Jackie on October 18, 2009

The New Victoria Infirmary is on the junction of quite a few busy roads, but they have still managed to create a bit of chilling-out space. I’m not sure how relaxing it would be to sit here with all the cars and buses and whathaveyou thundering past, but it looks peaceful anyway!

New Victoria Infirmary

Posted by Jackie on October 17, 2009

After what has felt like ages in the building, it’s looking like the new Victoria Infirmary (just over the road from the original one) is finally nearly ready. As I understand it they will be transferring services over quite slowly, so the original infirmary will be in use for probably a good few years before everything is transferred. I wonder what they’ll do with it then? I bet there are plenty of developers itching to get their hands on it!

Evangelical Gospel Mission at night

Posted by Jackie on October 16, 2009

I’ve shown the shopfront of the Evangelical Gospel Mission before – this is a close-up walking past one evening. I’m not sure if it’s always lit up at night or if it was just the weekend I was there (Glasgow was having its biennial lights festival that weekend and we were walking past the church on the way to the Cathedral).

As well as the various Bible verses you’ll also spot the original Glasgow motto (“Lord, let Glasgow flourish through the preaching of Thy word and praising Thy name”).

Autumn mosque

Posted by Jackie on October 15, 2009

Another archive shot (can you see I’m digging out all the autumn ones so that at least the trees look more or less like they do now!). This is the entrance to Glasgow Central Mosque.

Giant pasta?

Posted by Jackie on October 14, 2009

Now this picture I took ages and ages ago, and now I’m trying to remember where on earth it is! I’ve got a shortlist of two – it’s on a wall either in Renfrew Street or Ingram Street – I’m pretty sure the 66 bus goes past it anyway! It always reminds me of the pasta art we did at school when I was a kid, making patterns with the pasta stuck on paper, then spraying it silver or gold.

Towering over

Posted by Jackie on October 13, 2009

The church on the left is Queens Park Baptist Church, and the one on the right is Queens Park parish church (ie Church of Scotland). Pretty much wherever you are in Queens Park you can’t miss them.

Central Station view

Posted by Jackie on October 12, 2009

Here’s another one from ages and ages ago, showing the lines and curves of Central Station again. The curved building is part of the hotel which is part of the station – actually outside it is all boarded up and is undergoing some major renovation work – I hear through the grapevine it is due to reopen in February next year (I saw it on the internet so it must be true). On the bottom of the curved bit is the ticket office for local journeys – if you want to get a ticket for further afield the ticket office for that is out the main entrance and immediately left at the front of the station.
