A quick break from Celtic Connections photos – although I did take this whilst on my way to the Fruitmarket. This is of course the area round the side and back of the Gallery of Modern Art, and one of my favourite Glasgow views. This is the most magical space, I just love standing underneath these lights.

The top two pictures are a band called Black Cat (from Edinburgh – I’m guessing their name is inspired by the utterly brilliant film Black Cat White Cat) – their MySpace page is here. The bottom two pictures are a band called Besh o droM from Hungary (on MySpace here).

Maybe I’m weird, but one thing I really enjoyed about this gig, as well as the music, was the visual stuff that was going on above the stage. Some of it was really funny, with some enjoyable references for anyone familiar with the Balkan region.

The next day we were back at the Fruitmarket for their Balkan night. We were greeted on our arrival by a couple of musicians and dancer in the audience space.

The first band we went to see was The Imagined Village, a group of folk luminaries (including Martin and Eliza Carthy amongst many others) giving new life to some traditional English folk songs. It was a fabulous gig. You can check out their music on their myspace page.

I loved the lights and colours on the spiral staircase linking the upstairs and downstairs viewing areas at the Fruitmarket.

This is looking up to the balcony at the back of the Old Fruitmarket. I love how they’ve kept all the signs from the original fruitsellers.

Last week I went to a couple of Celtic Connections concerts at the Old Fruitmarket (both were brilliant, obviously!). I also got the chance to try out the new camera a bit, so the next week I’ll show various Fruitmarket photos (building and bands). This is just looking up at the ceiling. It’s such a brilliant venue! (did I say I really like it?!).

Here’s Wellington’s statue in its entirety – I thought he looked rather good with a sprinkling of snow. The building behind him with the fancy columns is the Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA).
