Cafe Cossachok

Posted by Jackie on June 15, 2010

Downstairs from the Sharmanka Kinetic Theatre at 103 Trongate is a lovely Russian cafe called Cafe Cossachok. I love the decoration of these pillars.

This is just one example of the handmade-from-scrap models in the Sharmanka Kinetic Theatre. The theatre’s wikipedia page says it’s like “Hieronymous Bosch meets Heath Robinson”. It made me think at the time “Tim Burton meets Banksy in a scrap yard, with lots of vodka”. Each model does its thing in turn, accompanied by a range of music from Russian drinking songs to Scottish folk music. It’s really fantastic!

Yes I know the blog’s having a break, but I’m procrastinating, so what better excuse to put up a couple of new photos!

A couple of months ago I finally made it to one of Glasgow’s more bizarre attractions, the Sharmanka Kinetic Theatre. It was quite bonkers, but utterly wonderful – I’ll put up another couple of pictures over the next day or so. Well worth a visit.

Slightly to the left of yesterday’s picture, this one shows the view looking towards the Glasgow Tower, and just to its right the Science Centre and IMAX Cinema. To the right of that you might also be able to make out the BBC studios at Pacific Quay.

There’s snow in them there hills

Posted by Jackie on March 22, 2010

I was really pleased with the zoom lens to be able to capture several landmarks in one go *and* the hills in the background as well with such clarity. Landmarks you may recognise from previous photos here are (L-R) the SECC (Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre, also known as the Armadillo), the Finnieston Crane, the top of the Clyde Arc (or Squinty Bridge), and the Main Building of Glasgow University.

How many frogs?

Posted by Jackie on March 21, 2010

I know this blog is on a bit of a hiatus, but after a few weeks of work and a few days of a nasty tummy bug, I thought I’d go for a restorative walk round Queen’s Park, and try out my new zoom lens at the same time. At the small pond there were lots of people pointing and taking photos, and when I got close I saw why. There was quite a bit of X-rated froggy activity going on, and lots and lots of spawn already.

I can see 12 frogs in this picture – can you see any more?

(I’ll show a couple of views I took over the next couple of days to show off my new toy).

So, with the final post on this blog for the time being, I wanted to find something which reflected the quirkiness of Glasgow as I think it’s the quirkiness that I really like about the city and hope I’ve managed to portray here over the last couple of years. This comes from the stairway at the Lighthouse, until last September Glasgow’s Centre for Architecture and Design. Sadly the Lighthouse had to close due to financial troubles, which I’m really sad about as it was one of my favourite museums in the city. I hope a way is found to resurrect it somehow.

Thanks to everyone who has been kind enough to leave comments here since I started this blog – although lately it’s been a bit more of an effort, for the most part it has been an absolute delight to showcase this great city. I’ve learnt lots – about photography, about other cities in the world (through the City Daily Photo Blog initiative of which this blog is a part), and about Glasgow. So that’s cool 🙂 Thanks to you all.

This is one of the more colourful exhibits in the Transport Museum, from Pakistan. Apparently there was a project in Glasgow a few years ago to decorate a bus in a similar style, but I don’t know if anything ever came of it?

Dead beautiful

[Again hoping I’m not recycling a photo!] Just a random view from the Necropolis.

There’s no competition, you have to take pictures here in black and white.

This cone, which I snapped a couple of years ago on Great Western Road, appeared to have been there so long that you can see the grass growing out of the top!
