Evangelical Gospel Mission at night

Posted by Jackie on October 16, 2009

I’ve shown the shopfront of the Evangelical Gospel Mission before – this is a close-up walking past one evening. I’m not sure if it’s always lit up at night or if it was just the weekend I was there (Glasgow was having its biennial lights festival that weekend and we were walking past the church on the way to the Cathedral).

As well as the various Bible verses you’ll also spot the original Glasgow motto (“Lord, let Glasgow flourish through the preaching of Thy word and praising Thy name”).

Gate and coat of arms

Posted by Jackie on August 12, 2009

This is a detail from the wrought iron gates at the entrance to the Botanics. I’d not noticed before that the coat of arms even made it here too!

Glasgow flourishing in the Botanics

Posted by Jackie on August 3, 2009

Here’s the ubiquitous coat of arms again – this one can be found just inside the entrance to the Botanic Gardens at the corner of Queen Margaret Drive and Great Western Road.

I was very happy a couple of weeks ago that I spotted another example of the coat of arms that I’d not noticed before, despite having gone past it on the bus very regularly for the last 3+ years! Will have to find the time to get off the bus and add it to my growing collection 🙂

Coat of arms again

Posted by Jackie on July 5, 2009

Ooh look here’s the Glasgow coat of arms again – the bell, tree, fish, bird and ring. This one is on the gate leading from Glasgow Green to the Winter Gardens by the People’s Palace.

That coat of arms gets everywhere, part 379!

Here it is again, St Mungo with the bell, fish, tree and bird, this time on a lamppost just outside the entrance to the Botanic Gardens.

Let Glasgow Flourish (terracotta version)

Posted by Jackie on June 6, 2009

Glasgow’s coat of arms and motto (“Let Glasgow Flourish”) is dotted all over the city in various guises, and fairly regularly makes an appearance on this blog. Today’s example is from the Doulton Fountain in yesterday’s photo – all the way round the bottom of the fountain, underneath the sculptures from the Empire, are these sculptures of St Mungo (otherwise known as St Kentigern) with the fish, tree, bell, bird and ring of the coat of arms.

Here’s another example of the Glasgow coat of arms. This one is up on the outside wall of the Royal Concert Hall.
