There’s snow in them there hills

Posted by Jackie on March 22, 2010

I was really pleased with the zoom lens to be able to capture several landmarks in one go *and* the hills in the background as well with such clarity. Landmarks you may recognise from previous photos here are (L-R) the SECC (Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre, also known as the Armadillo), the Finnieston Crane, the top of the Clyde Arc (or Squinty Bridge), and the Main Building of Glasgow University.

Lilybank Gardens

Posted by Jackie on February 24, 2010

[Really hoping I haven’t shown this photo on the blog already!] Lilybank Gardens is a row of tenements owned by Glasgow University and housing various departments – including mine (though my office, on the rare occasions now I’m back at uni, is not here but up the hill a bit).

Foggy university

Posted by Jackie on January 8, 2010

One from the same day as the previous picture, this shows the university tower in the fog (I know I showed a picture of this before, but I’m pretty sure it was a different picture. Funnily enough I took several 😀 ).

Red sky at night

Posted by Jackie on December 13, 2009

I took this as I was going home from the university almost for the last time and heading for the bus stop on University Avenue, at the end of October. Unfortunately due to the exposure settings on the camera being a complete mystery to me, I was unable to reproduce the dark blue sky or the deep deep reds of the clouds. It was an amazing sky.

I went back to the university last week one evening after work – my PhD supervisors are being very accommodating and meeting me in the evenings when we need to meet. It was really strange being back, even though I’ve only been away a month and a half! It’s like a different world now I’ve got a proper job!

University sky

Posted by Jackie on November 15, 2009

Another old photo – it’s been 2 weeks since I left the university and started my job in a less aesthetically beautiful part of the city, and it feels like forever ago. So I am posting this as much for nostalgic purposes as anything else. (I’m worried I’ve shown this photo before, but if I did it was ages ago). The sky hasn’t been this colour for a while!

Thank you for all your kind comments on the last post. My new job is going OK so far; the worst thing about it is that I have to get to work for 8.30am which is killing me! (I’m still such a student at heart! :D)

You might think from this blog that there’s only one university in Glasgow. Actually there are 3 (4 if you count the University of the West of Scotland, which is in nearby Paisley). As well as Glasgow University itself, there are also two city centre universities, Strathclyde and Glasgow Caledonian. This picture shows the entrance to the latter – it was taken a few weeks ago, when the weather was much much better than now! It is known by pretty much everyone as “Caley”.

Ancient and modern

Posted by Jackie on October 24, 2009

Here’s some of the varied architecture you can find at the University of Glasgow along University Avenue. The glass building is the Wolfson Building, home of the medical school. You’re by now very familiar with the tower from the Main Building in the background. The building between the two I think houses the Botany Department (but I’m open to correction on that!).

Autumn twilight

Posted by Jackie on October 10, 2009

We all know by now where this is! The University, in the fading autumn light. Lovely.

Another one from 2 years ago, this is from a tree at the top of Great George Street, in the heart of the university area. I do have a good excuse not to take a picture this year – this tree is outside a building which is covered in scaffolding (and has been for several months), and the scaffolding is rather encroaching onto the tree’s space. I love the colours of the leaves, it really is so vibrant, it’s a shame it’s so hidden this year.

Wildlife garden

Posted by Jackie on September 29, 2009

On the path between the QM and the Adam Smith building (where I have my office) is this little bit of land, and I’m embarrassed to say (having now been at the university for 4 years) that I only noticed a couple of weeks ago that it is a wildlife garden. I’m really not sure if it’s OK to just wander round or if you have to just look from the path. The other weekend I visited the campus at Stirling University, which was full of trees and landscaping and was lovely (though a bit out in the sticks). Our green space isn’t quite so impressive, but we do at least have these little patches of green (and yellow and brown by the look of the falling leaves).
